“There’s an oil for that!” is one of my most used phrases. It’s always the answer when people tell me about their aches and pains, anxiety and stress, insomnia, acne, and the list goes on. I started using essential oils over a year ago, but didn’t start using them on a daily basis until about 4 months ago. Now Peter and I have our daily oil routine.
Some of you may feel a little skeptical about the effectiveness of essential oils and, trust me, I’ve been there. I didn’t get how putting an oil on your body could do anything. It all seemed like a big scam. I bought my first oils through my sister-in-law because she swore by them. At that point in my life, I was dealing with a lot of stomach problems and anxiety/stress issues. She recommended peppermint and lavender oil. I didn’t see the harm in trying, so I gave it a shot. The first day I tried them, I was amazed at the results but remained skeptical thinking “this must just be a placebo effect”. It wasn’t.
I only use Young Living essential oils and that’s mostly because that’s the company that I was first introduced to. Upon further research, I’m very thankful that it was. I have an amazing book about Young Living essential oils and their uses called the Essential Oils Desk Reference. Here are some of my favourite oils, their uses based on the book, and what I like to use them for.
Uses: Respiratory infections, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, menstrual problems/PMS, skin conditions (perineal repair, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring, stretch marks), burns, hair loss, insomnia, nervous tension.
Lavender is my friend. Not a day goes by that I don’t use lavender. We use it every evening combined with cedarwood and orange to help us sleep. I also use it whenever I have a headache or feel stressed and anxious. Another way I use it is in my shampoo because it’s amazing for hair. My Mum was sold on lavender when we used it on her bee sting and the pain and swelling was taken away within minutes. I’m not quite sure what I’d do without my daily dose of lavender.
Uses: Rheumatism/arthritis, respiratory infections (pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc.), obesity, viral infections, fungal infections/Candida, digestive problems, headaches, nausea, skin conditions (itchy skin, varicose veins, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis), scoliosis/lumbago/back problems.
I use peppermint whenever I’m having any type of stomach issues. From bloating to nausea, peppermint does the trick. I also use it in the lotion that I make because the cooling sensation helps when my eczema gets itchy.
Uses: Alzheimer’s, fluid retention, depression, obesity, liver disorders, anxiety, cellulite.
Grapefruit has such a soothing aroma. I massage a mixture of grapefruit oil and sweet almond oil into my legs every night. It smells amazing and keeps my legs so smooth. I also use it in my homemade dish soap.
Uses: Circulatory problems, arteriosclerosis, obesity, parasites, urinary tract infections, varicose veins, anxiety, hypertension, digestive problems, acne.
There are so many uses for lemon. It’s great used in homemade soaps and cleaners. I use it in my shower cleaner, along with grapefruit, orange, and lime. It smells so fresh and actually makes me enjoy cleaning my shower!
Uses: Infectious disease, liver conditions/hepatitis, throat/lung infections, hair loss, impaired memory/Alzheimer’s, weight loss
We use rosemary in our shampoo to promote healthy hair. I also inhale it whenever I need a boost of energy as it has a very invigorating scent.
R.C. is a blend of myrtle, eucalyptus globulus, marjoram, pine, eucalyptus citriodora, lavender, cypress, eucalyptus radiata, spruce, and peppermint. It’s used to give relief from colds, bronchitis, sore throats, sinusitis, coughs, and respiratory congestion. It decongests sinus passages, combats lung infections, and relieves allergy symptoms.
This is the best smelling oil blend ever! Sometimes I use it just because I love the smell of it. It’s a great blend made to deal with chest congestion. Usually when I get colds, it hangs around in my chest for weeks, sometimes even a month or two. That is not the case now that I use this oil.
Thieves is a blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary. It is a blend of highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-infectious essential oils.
Naturally, this blend makes sense to use in household cleaners. It’s great diffused to help support your immune system and it smells like Christmas, so that’s a big bonus.
There are so many other oils that I love to use, but those are currently my favourites. I buy glass roller bottles and make my own blends to help with different things: bloating, acne, insomnia, bug bites, etc. basically anything you can think of, oils can help with.
So, why do I use essential oils? They are a natural alternative to medication that comes without the side effects. God gave us all of these plants, trees, herbs, and flowers to use for their healing purposes. Just so we’re clear, I’m not saying that you should ditch your medication if you have a serious ailment, but you can certainly use them to help with the treatment. I no longer need to take pain killers for my aching back after teaching or every time I get a headache from a particularly stressful day at work. Oils do the trick. I no longer lay awake until the wee hours of the morning night after night because oils help me relax and sleep. I no longer have stomach problems on the daily, no longer have anxiety about every little thing, and the list goes on and on. Essential oils have changed my life. Not only essential oils, but living in a toxin free environment. Peter and I have never been so healthy in our lives. Not only are we careful about what we put into our bodies, we’re careful about what we put onto our bodies. That is equally as important, if not more important than what we eat.
