Peter and I have officially moved in to my parents’ place and we honestly couldn’t be happier with our set up. We ended up having to move back to my parents’ place because no one would let us rent with our rodents and snake. In the end, moving in with my parents for a little while ended up being the best choice as we’ll be able to save up for a down payment on a house. So we’re very comfortable here and our home is looking very Christmassy.

Before I tell you about our road trip to California, I have some sad news. A few days before leaving, we made the tough decision to put our rat, Sherlock, down. Some of you may be thinking “she’s just a rat!”, but to us she was family. She deteriorated incredibly fast. She lost a ton of weight and became very weak, not even being able to pick up her food to eat it. Every morning I fed her mashed banana and gave her yogurt to help her gain weight and build up her strength. None of this helped her and she started to refuse water. Walking became difficult for her and she couldn’t keep her balance, which made grooming herself almost impossible. We knew it was time to put her down when she started bleeding from her eyes. Seeing her so sick and depressed just about broke my heart. Although I knew putting her down was the best thing for her, it didn’t make it any easier. Saying goodbye to her was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I miss her so much, it hurts.

My sweet, sweet girl.

After going through the pain of losing my sweet Sherlock, our road trip to California was a welcomed distraction. We started our trip straight after work on Friday and arrived in Anaheim on Sunday.

It was a long drive, but Peter and I enjoyed seeing the sights and spending lots of quality time together. While in Anaheim, we went to Disneyland, California Adventure, Universal Studios, and San Diego Zoo. It was so much fun to have Peter with me experiencing it all for the first time.

Here are some highlights from our trip:

  • California Screaming

Peter spent the whole time leading up to going to California telling me that he wouldn’t go on California Screaming. Even when we were in the park, he still refused to go on it. I practically dragged him onto the ride and he was stressing out, worrying about going upside down especially. Guess what ended up being his favourite ride? And guess what his favourite part of the ride was? You guessed it, the upside down part. So it turns out that he’s not as much of a wimp as he thought he was.

  • Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters

The picture says it all.

  • The Haunted Mansion

The Nightmare Before Christmas will forever be one of my favourite movies so I absolutely love how they transform the Haunted Mansion over Christmas.

  • Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Harry Potter area in Universal Studios was out of this world! We had such an amazing time there, the town that they created was incredible, the castle was so impressive, and the ride, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, was unlike any ride I’ve ever been on. Not recommended for those who suffer from motion sickness, however. Peter and I were the only ones who could stomach going on it more than once.

  • The Mummy

This ride was what Peter was most looking forward to since he loves The Mummy movies. He figures he’s seen them at least 100 times because they were his favourite when he was younger. The ride did not disappoint. Although the ride doesn’t reach the same speed as California Screaming, the launch feels a lot faster. We both consider that ride to be one of our favourites out of all of the parks.

  • San Diego Zoo

I loved seeing the elephants, wild cats, and giraffes. I was really impressed with this zoo and it seems like they treat the animals really well and do their best to give them spacious enclosures.

Favourite rides in Disneyland: Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Splash Mountain, The Haunted Mansion (Nightmare Before Christmas)

Favourite rides in California Adventure: Tower of Terror, California Screaming, Radiator Springs Racers

Favourite rides in Universal Studios: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, The Mummy

On our way home, we stopped by Santa Cruz to see my cousin, Caroline, and her husband, Josh. We had an awesome time with them and they showed us around San Francisco before we continued our journey home.

Although it was tiring at times, Peter and I had an amazing trip and such a great time travelling together. We made so many good memories and we really look forward to the next adventure that we get to go on.
